"The slave market with the vanishing bust of Voltaire" is an extraordinary visualization and the most perfect example of double imaging in art. Dali used the illusion to create a composition with 1778's famous bust of Voltaire Jean-Antoine Houdon, fruit on the pater, smoke from the censer and other details. Dali's whole life was fascinated by optical illusion. Inspired by the work of the 16th century pre-surrealist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. In his youth he also studied Voltaire's philosophical works.

One of his most famous works - Candide, or optimism (Candide, ou L'Optimisme), which includes the thesis that "we must cultivate our garden" was especially appreciated by the surrealists. On the left side, Dali portrays his wife Gala, who, leaning over a table covered with a red velvet tablecloth, watches the scene unfold, giving the viewer a sense of where our view should be focused.

"The slave market with the vanishing bust of Voltaire" became a hit of the connoisseurs of the art of Dale on the organized retrospective of the masterpieces of the Center Pompidou in Paris in 2012-2013.
