Biography
American artist known for her op-art works and at the same time a legendary, prominent art educator. In her paintings, complementary patterns fill the space while playing illusory games with the viewer. The forms are reminiscent of Middle Eastern mosaics. The artist herself said: "I consider myself a continuation of the ancient tradition of these anonymous artisan artists." She was born in Portsmouth (Virginia). In 1935-36 she studied at the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania. In 1937 she earned a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1941 she married an architect, Preston Andrade. Her career as a university teacher began in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1946 she moved to Philadelphia, where she remained for the rest of her life. For 30 years she taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where a scholarship named after her is still awarded today. A retrospective exhibition of her work entitled "Cool Waves and Hot Blocks: The Art of Edna Andrade" took place in 1993 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
