From the beginning, his art was based on space and constructivist organization, which led to works of great formal rigor in which drawing, painting and sculpture were integrated into a spatial dimension of architectural scope.
In 1959, he had his first solo exhibition at Galleria Alberti in Brescia, followed a year later by Galleria Colonna in Milan. In 1965 he participated in the group exhibition La figuration narracja dans l'art contemporain in Paris. In 1967, he began working with Studio Marconi in Milan, focusing on creating works that were new interpretations of historical avant-gardes such as abstractionism, suprematism, constructivism and neoplasticism.
His Architectures from the 1970s show his desire to build and establish space through painting, as he saw it as a means of expression that could immediately realize an "idea." His works are developed through signs and geometric forms of gesture, which, combined with a limited range of colors, helped him express the constructivist concept.
First in 1974 and later in 1993 he participated in the Biennale at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan. In 1981, his works were presented in two major group exhibitions: "Linee della ricerca artistic in Italy 1960/1980" at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and "Il luogo della forma" at the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona. In 1984, the University of Parma organized a major retrospective of his work, and two years later he had solo exhibitions at the Venice Biennale, Milan Triennale and Rome Quadriennale.
In 1998 he had a solo exhibition at the Palazzo Reale in Milan. The following year, a number of important exhibitions were held in Germany: at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt, the Bochum Museum in Bochum and the Kulturhistorisches Museum in Stralsund. In 2000, his solo exhibition Homeless was held at Galleria Giò Marconi in Milan. In 2002, Sheets hosted a retrospective exhibition at Galleria Fumagalli in Bergamo, and in 2003 he again exhibited a series of works entitled Danceand Restoration at Galleria Giò Marconi.
Over the course of his career, he has made numerous sculptures for public and private spaces throughout Italy, and has been a member of the National Academy of San Luca since 2008.
