Biography
Polish painter and theater decorator. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and associated his later career with this city. He was engaged not only in easel painting, but also in theatrical set design. Between 1827 and 1870 he worked with the capital's institutions, such as the Theater on Leopoldstadt, the Theater on Josefstadt, and the Court Opera (Hofoper). He was the son of a Greek Catholic priest, and perhaps his father's profession influenced his artistic interests. Indeed, Yachimovich's work is dominated by genre scenes with religious themes, set in the interiors of churches and monasteries. The artist repeatedly recreated authentic spaces, but also created architectural fantasies, maintained in the spirit of idealized, stylized realistic painting. He also created strictly sacred paintings, including iconostases, for churches, mainly in Vienna.
