In 1863 she was arrested for attempting to deliver a deposition to Romuald Traugutt; she was sentenced to exile deep into Russia, where she remained until June 1864. The book contains an excerpt from her personal "Diary," including her years of youth in Polesia, her artistic activities, her pre-insurrection period, her stay in prison with descriptions of the cruelty of the Muscovites, her diary of her journey into exile from Pinsk to Tambov, and her stay in exile.
