Ferdinand II of Austria (1578-1637) was the son of Charles of Styria, brother of Emperor Maximilian II of Bavaria and Marie. He succeeded his uncle Rudolf II (1576-1612) and Matthias (1612-1619). It becomes Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1619. The Thirty Years War has just begun and it will ravage throughout Europe, from Sweden to Spain, from France to Poland. The operations center is in Germany that is devastated and bled out of this conflict. Ferdinand II died before the end of this war. His son Ferdinand III succeeds him.
