Count Volkmar Wolfgang von Hohnstein was the penultimate of the family, unfortunately he did not bring pride to the Hostein family. He was a very indebted and not very assertive county regent. In 1562, through his chancellor Peter Böttcher, he sold his Niedergebra property to baron Christoph vom Hagen auf Deuna.
