Lot description
Grade: VF
Reference: RIC 41

Nice and extremely rare Domitian denarius minted in Rome between September 13 (death of Titus) and December 31, 81 AD. The denarius offered is among the early coins of Domitian minted in the first months after the death of his older brother, Titus. The transitional character of the coin is emphasized by the fact that Domitian on the obverse was described only as PONT (ifex), and not P (ontifex) M (aximus) (the title of the high priest from Augustus was held only by emperors), and the portrait still refers to representations from in the time of Vespasian and Titus.
