Roman Republic

Julius Caesar (47-46 BC), Denarius 46 BC, uncertain mint in North Africa (Utica?)

The presented type of denarius was certainly minted after Caesar's victory over Pompey in 46 BC. On the obverse, the legend indicates that Caesar is a dictator for the second time, and the head of Ceres symbolizes Africa and the wealth of the province in cereals. On the reverse, the letter M "munus" means a gift and indicates the rewards that Caesar paid after his victory in Africa. The reverse also reminds that Caesar was proclaimed Pontifex Maximus.
