Biography
Studied at the Teacher's Seminary in Poznań (1925-1930) and at the State School of Decorative Arts and Artistic Industry in Poznań (1930-1935) under Jan Wroniecki and Karol Mondral. In 1936, he moved to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he received his diploma under Stanislaw Ostoja-Chrostowski in 1939; he completed his diploma at the Graphic Arts Department of the academy in 1947. He spent the years of World War II in Poznań. He did not engage in artistic creation during this time. Shortly after the war, he took up teaching work at the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Poznań, where he taught from 1945-1952 and 1958-1959. He also taught at the State High School of Visual Arts in Poznań, where he served as director from 1963-1965. He retired in 1975. He was a laureate of the Awards of the City of Poznań in 1959 and 1965. His oeuvre includes nearly 300 graphics (mainly in woodcut technique) - realistic figural compositions, religious, vedutas and landscapes. He was also involved in drawing and painting. From the second half of the 1950s he more boldly introduced stylization and simplification of form into his works. From this period come grotesque compositions with "masks," drawing inspiration from the world of theater and circus.
