The tragic epilogue of Pushkin's life is the main theme of this historical novel. The narrative is framed in the form of a diary of a young French diplomat who took part in the famous duel on January 27, 1837 as one of the seconds. By virtue of his mission, the narrator - a close friend of Pushkin's assassin, by the way - must have been closely acquainted with St. Petersburg's government circles, salons, artistic and political world, so the book is also a great historical document.
