Description:
The novel was published in 1876 by the Warsaw Booksellers' Company, (represented by the firm of Gebethner and Wolff in Warsaw), which in that year began publishing a series of historical novels by Kraszewski, intended to cover the entire history of Poland. The composition of the novels was done at the Wladyslaw Anczyc printing house in Cracow. Still during the writer's lifetime there was a second edition (1879) having an album character (with illustrations by Michal Androlli). The writer's surviving correspondence shows that the author, who was in Dresden at the time, was sent some proofreading sheets for both editions, while there are no traces of proofreading returns or evidence that the printing house or publisher responded to the author's remarks. From Gebethner and Anczyc's documents, it would appear that Kraszewski did inspect some of the novel's pages, but this was only an inspection of the proofreading work of the printing house itself.
