Description of work:
Ludwik Stasiak is mainly known as a creator of genre scenes with folk themes, but in addition to this, the artist has repeatedly taken up the theme of self-portraiture, which was for him the starting point for demonstrating not only his technical prowess, but also the psychology of his own self.
The painting on display follows the convention of the traditional representational portrait, where most of the pictorial field is filled with the figure facing the viewer. Ludwik Stasiak has shown himself from the waist up, against a uniform, dark, neutral background. His figure is clearly confident, a calmness beats from his gaze. The mature man exudes elegance and dignity. The artist's distinctive attire with a bow and white collar recurs several times in this painter's own portraits.
The high realism of the depiction, its meticulousness and superbly framed chiaroscuro make the painting a superb, traditionalist and timeless work, but one that captures the character of the era of the first decades of the 20th century.
