Battle of the Boyne - armed clash on July 1, 1690, which was the decisive point in the actions of William III of Orange, Governor of the Republic of the United Provinces, King of England and Scotland, against the dethroned King James II Stuart on the Boyne River near the town of Drogheda in Ireland. The battle, which ended in victory for William III of Orange, had symbolic significance and became a marker of Protestant supremacy. The painting presented at auction, by Philip van Kouwenbergh, is a version of a well-known work by Jan van Huchtenburg in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
