Artwork description:
The vast majority of paintings created by Soter Jax-Malachowski were marine in nature. The artist was particularly fond of depicting the Baltic Sea, to which he periodically traveled as part of plein-air painting trips. As a result of them, extremely atmospheric landscapes were created.
The work on display depicts a boat on a calm sea with two vigorously rowing men escaping an approaching storm. A dark mass of looming threatening clouds is clearly visible in the sky. The dynamism of the entire composition is also influenced by the snow-white seagulls shown in flight, cutting through the dark shades of blue and gray that dominate here.
This atmospheric scene aptly depicts the moment before the rain arrives. Soter Jaxa-Malachowski has, in his characteristic way, rendered the beauty and at the same time the terror of the sea element.
