Podczas III wojny śląskiej w 1757 r. wojska austriackie zdobyły w 1757 r. Świdnicę. Jednak już 1 stycznia 1758 r. wojska pruskie pod dowództwem Heinricha de la Motte Fouqué rozpoczęły oblężenie twierdzy. Wiosną dowódca oblegających został generał von Tresckow. Austriacy dowodzeni przez generała Thierheima skapitulowali 18 kwietnia.
