Biography
Twin sisters Alicja and Bożena Wahl were born in Warsaw and both graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in Eugeniusz Eibisch's studio in 1957. Since 1961, the artists exhibited together. At their first exhibition at the Krzywe Koło Gallery, they presented ceramics, and at subsequent exhibitions, drawing and painting. They showed their works many times, also outside Poland - in France, Germany, Sweden, the United States. In 1979, they established a gallery in their home in Warsaw's Żoliborz district. The A.B. Wahl Gallery specialized mainly in art derived from the tradition of Surrealism, which was also familiar to the sisters themselves. In addition to, drawing, painting, printmaking and ceramics, Alicja Wahl, together with her sister, created set designs for Kabaret Starszych Panów and TV Theater productions. They collaborated with the weekly magazine "Kultura", magazines "Ty i ja", "Szpilki" and with publishing houses as cartoonists and illustrators. Until the late 1960s, their work was very difficult to distinguish. Only in the early 1970s did it become more distinct, gaining individual characteristics. Color began to appear on Alice's works and her palette became brighter. Female sexuality became the center of her interest.
