Painter, graphic artist, student of Z. Pronaszko and A. Fedkowicz at the Free School of Painting of L. Mehofferowa and the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of W. Weiss, F. Kowarski, J. Pankiewicz. He supplemented his studies in Paris, where he exhibited twice at the Autumn Salon. After returning to Cracow, he joined the Zwornik grouping. In 1936, together with J. Jarema, he founded the A. Gierymski School of Painting in Katowice. After the war, he was a professor at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts and four times rector of the school. He traveled extensively, including to Italy, France, Holland, Greece and Spain. He participated in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad (New York, Brussels, Venice, Tokyo). He is one of the most prominent Polish colorists, in addition to easel painting, he practiced drawing and printmaking. He painted landscapes, still lifes and devoted much attention to nudes.
