The artist was born in Klaipeda in 1960 and spent his childhood and youth in this port city in Lithuania. He studied Lithuanian Philology and Literature at Vilnius University and it was there, in 1983, that he had his first painting exhibition. After graduating, he returned to Klaipeda and took a job as a teacher; at the same time, he began studying at the Klaipeda Academy of Fine Arts. During this time came more exhibitions; first in other Lithuanian cities - Kaunas, Siauliai, Alytus, Kretinga; and then abroad - Lomza, Hamburg, Manhaim, Bukov, Berlin, Norden, Warsaw, Gdansk. The artist's works began to appear in art galleries and private collections around the world - Israel, Canada, the United States, Germany, Poland, Azerbaijan.
Povilas Dirgela artist painter
In 2005 Povilas Dirgela became a member of the Samogitian Artists Association; in 2009 he received the official title of art creator from the Minister of Culture of Lithuania.
Povilas Dirgela's body of work is surrealist, and in this area Salvador Dali is his idol, but it is the sea that has been the leitmotif of his work from the very beginning. Every year, with great joy, he participates in open-air paintings organized by the Marine Section of the Association of Polish Artists.
The artist currently lives and works in Klaipeda.
