Eugeniusz EIBISCH
1895 Lublin - 1987 Warsaw
Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the direction of J. Malczewski and W. Weiss. In 1922 he received a scholarship from the French government and went to Paris. He entered the circle of painters of Ecole de Paris: G. Braque, H. Hayden, M. Kisling, C. Soutine, M. Utrill, E. Zak. During his stay in France, he exhibited a lot, among others: in the Paris Salons; Autumn and Independent. During this period, the artist exhibited a lot, including in Belgium, Switzerland and England. In 1939 he returned to Poland and took up the chair of drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. From 1945 he was the rector of the same academy. From 1950-1969 he was a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. After the war he participated in many prestigious exhibitions around the world. Eibisch's early work was influenced by the aesthetic concepts of the Formists. During the Paris period, the artist painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits of concentrated expression, maintained in dark, dramatic tones, close to the style of Ch. Soutine. Glowing forms with inner light emerge in his paintings from the fluid matter of freely applied paint. Awarded the Guggenheim Museum Prize in 1960, in the second half of the l. 1920s, Eibisch lightened his color palette, only to darken it again in the 1930s with a predominance of browns; he gave a dimension of mystery to figures and objects extracted from a dark background. In later years he confirmed his affiliation with the color trend. During the Stalinist era, he created in accordance with the Socialist Realist doctrine, but later returned to the expressive treatment of color.
