Eugeniusz Geppert (1890-1979), a colorist painter, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow under Jacek Malczewski. He also trained at the Jagiellonian University and the studios of painters in Paris (1925-27 and 1957). He presented his works at the Paris Autumn Salon in 1925, 1927 and 1928. Before 1939, he was a member of the Zwornik Group. After World War II, he settled in Wroclaw, where he was the organizer of the State Higher School of Fine Arts, now the Academy of Fine Arts, and the first rector of the school until 1950. He worked at the Wroclaw academy until 1961, leading the painting studio. He was the initiator of a creative group called the Wroclaw Group, which was founded in 1961 and functioned as the Wroclaw School until 1967. The founding members of the Wroclaw Group included mostly students from Prof. E.Geppert's studio, and the formation gave rise to many currents in Wroclaw avant-garde art of the 1960s and 1970s, including structuralism, geometric abstraction, conceptualism and surrealism. Eugeniusz Geppert's work belongs to the current of Polish Colorism, also known as Kapism (from the abbreviation KP - Paris Committee), which dominated Polish painting in the second half of the 1920s. The basic features of this painting were formed under the influence of French Post-Impressionism, primarily the art of P.Cezanne and P.Bonnard, which is also evident in Geppert's work. For Eugeniusz Geppert and artists of his generation, Paris became a place of encounter with current European and world art and an inspiration for painting. Painting series created by the artist include horse portraits, racing, hunting, battle painting, as well as portrait and landscape painting, including views of Paris. E. Geppert's paintings also refer to the Polish painting tradition of P. Michalowski and the Kossak brothers, and can be found in many private and museum collections.
