Biography
Painter, key figure of the Hungarian neo-avant-garde. He graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1963. In the 1960s, he abandoned the smoky colors of Hungarian realism, instead becoming interested in the colors of Impressionism and Cubist form. A trip to Russia allowed him to see firsthand the paintings of Matisse, Picasso, Léger and Kandinsky, through which his work began to move definitively toward abstract painting. Winner of the prestigious Kossuth Prize (2002) and many other awards. His exhibitions have been shown in Poland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United States. Bak's works are in the collections of the Tate Modern, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Vienna's MUMOK, the Musée d'Art Contemporain in Lyon and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest.
