Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow in 1951 with a degree in painting from Professor Zbigniew Pronaszko's studio. As a student he made his debut at the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Cracow in 1948-49. Since 1962 he has been a member of the Cracow Group. In 1974, he began teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and in 1987-90 was the rector of the academy. In 1984 he received the Jan Cybis Award. In 1995 there was a monographic exhibition of the artist's works at the Warsaw Zachęta Gallery.
