Jean-François Julliard - self-taught painter, trained as a lawyer. He was born in 1934, in a family with artistic traditions - as he himself recalls, one of his earliest memories was watching his grandfather painting the landscapes of the Dordogne region, where the family took refuge during the war. He became interested in painting when he was still a teenager, while attending the prestigious Louis le Grand high school in Paris. Fascinated by the Impressionists and Fauvists and encouraged by his philosophy teacher, who was himself a painter and art collector, he began to make his first attempts. In the late 1950s, already a law student, he continued his experiments more seriously, imitating various styles from the Fauvists to Soutine, painting "southern landscapes and cliffs of Normandy, expressionist faces and still lifes full of bouquets or fish!" (Jean-François Julliard, Biographie).
In the years that followed, he focused on landscapes, especially of regions of France visited on vacation trips, and also experimented with techniques and materials.
