This was an international drawing competition established on the initiative of Joan Miró, held annually from 1961 to 1984, and since 1975 organized by the Joan Miró Foundation at its headquarters in Barcelona. Many Polish artists have participated in the Joan Miró competitions. Jerzy Grabowski was the winner of the 13th edition of the competition in 1974, in which he won a bronze medal.

Jerzy Grabowski (born Gutki near Lomza 26.IX.1933) studied from 1953 to 1962, first at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University in Wroclaw, then at the Faculty of Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He earned his diploma in the studio of Prof. Józef Mroszczak. Since 1976 he was a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, leading the studio of flat prints. Since 1993 he taught at the European Academy of Arts in Warsaw. Juror of international biennials and competitions, member of the International Association of Wood Engravers XYLON. He has practiced painting, artistic and applied printmaking and drawing. His work is based on mathematical structures. Mathematics was an important point of reference for him,he also used the phenomena of visual illusion. The most common form is the triangle adopted as the simplest yet most perfect figure, while the color system is subordinated to digital values. The structures of the compositions are open, extending far beyond the frame of the painting, stretching to infinity. The artist has had more than 40 solo exhibitions at home and abroad. Major awards; 1974 - Bronze Medal at the 13th Joan Miro International Drawing Competition in Barcelona, 1979 Grand Prix - 2nd Quadriennale of Polish Woodcut and Linocut in Olsztyn, 1999 - Gold Medal - 12th Norwegian International Triennale of Graphic Arts, Fredrikstadt.
