The original was painted by Jozef Simmler in 1859 and is in the National Museum in Warsaw.
Catherine Jagiellon (1526-1583) daughter of King Sigismund the Old of Poland, married Prince John Vasa of Finland in 1562. Jan's brother, King Eric XIV of Sweden, suspected him of conspiracy. Therefore, he imprisoned Jan and Catherine at Gripsholm Castle in 1563, where their son Sigismund was born in 1566. In 1568, Jan deposed his brother and became King John III of Sweden. His son was elected king of Poland in 1587.
