Kristófer Koma (pseud., b. 1979, Gdansk)
Cigar Room, 2023.
oil on canvas, 40 x 40 cm
The artist was born in 1979 in Gdansk, Poland. He has been painting and drawing since childhood. At the age of 10 he tried to paint copies of Van Gogh's paintings with water colors . Drawing has also always accompanied him somewhere along the line. In later years, he painted and drew more realistically, mainly based on photographs. He has always been interested in the human face and the emotions it contains. He analyzed facial anatomy to understand how best to transfer this to canvas or paper. Today, years later, he is no longer interested in realistic painting. His biggest role model has been Francis Bacon for years, but he does not copy him, trying to create his own style, based on similar principles - chance and error . The subconscious plays a big role in his works. He almost never makes a sketch and most of his canvases are attacked with paint at once - using a spatula or brush. His paintings are meant to arouse emotions and give food for thought. The artist paints only at night, often putting himself into a kind of trance by doing so - hence his nickname "Koma."
