"Malgorzata Korenkiewicz. A few words about the retrospective exhibition, 30 years of creative work. which will soon take place in 2024.
I have known Malgosia for years. We met when we were both very young (the year 2004-2005), not to mention beautiful. For years I have been observing her creative path, determination and cooperation with her spouse sculptor Boguslaw Zen.
She received her diploma in painting from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw (now the Academy of Fine Arts) in 1994. In the early days of her artistic activity, in addition to painting, she was involved in creating fashion, costumes from painted silk and other biodegradable materials(part of her creative period was painted works on silk). She boldly played with form and symbolism and her work can be divided into 3 main creative periods, very distinctive in the form of the message, but with a common feature - it is a disagreement with a life devoid of beauty, goodness and love, often prophetic or even warning the Polish people of annihilation.
I think she is in the middle of her creative work and will show us more than one more thing.
Always modest, petite and at the same time gently smiling and beautiful, she is creatively incomparable to anyone among contemporary Polish artists. This is a great asset.
At the retrospective exhibition of 30 years of creative work, the artist will show 3 major creative periods:
The earliest cycle, extremely prolific and strong in message is the period of the typical school of Wroclaw expressionism - the 1990s and further
The post pop-art period is 2000-2011
In both (1,2) creative periods, the artist is characterized by bold transgression of taboos, and unwillingness to be a so-called "good girl," as she says, and expressing emotions, by shocking the viewer is her clear opposition to the reality that surrounded her at the time (1990s), with a complete lack of coloring her surroundings.
Korenkiewicz pushes the boundaries. Her works are full of expression, strong in the expression of the guidance of the brush, unafraid of color, movement, as if they were a reaction of opposition and disagreement not only with "women's art", but with life during the period of turbulent changes in Poland.
Some of the works are reminiscent of symbolic works derived from graffiti or street art, they are full of stories that we had to live with and were not entirely acceptable.
The period of post pop art - the early 2000s to 2011 is so modern that, in fact, the artist even ran far into the future in her message, in her strong, controversial, for those times, paintings.
She presents works, including "Can These Eyes Lie," "Boy's Underpants" and "Erotic Triangle," where, with the help of a strong expression of emotions, she creates during a period of clear rebellion, against the then gray reality of life in the country.
"A person wanted to live normally, travel, enjoy life, and constantly met with adversity, and I wanted to show the middle finger to all of this". - in her own words.
The period of new symbolism with elements of surrealism(with elements of the patriotic period as if between the wars) from 2012 to the present work and can be seen in the paintings presented at the auction, entitled "Leda". "Leda", characterized by excellent painting technique and colors, while the symbolism makes it very erotic.
What is really missing is a beautiful gold frame for the whole thing.
I have the impression that many of the works, especially the last ones, are even prophetic, they give much food for thought and do not leave the viewer, without entering into mythology or history.
The author herself says little about them, but more is "told" by her paintings, which are mature in form and content. It is impossible to pass by them indifferently.
When we look at the paintings of the 1st and 2nd periods we keep wondering what the artist wanted to convey to us, and these two periods evoke strong emotions, which means that the artist managed to move us.
Art is supposed to work on our emotions and Malgosia's art does just that.
From the end of my studies until 2011, I always referred to Malgosia Korenkiewicz's work as "young-angry" art and she remained a constant rebel.
At the exhibition, we will certainly not see many works soon, because they simply do not exist in the country, as they are in private collections in addition to the country primarily in the world (London, New York, Germany, Dubai, India, Spain).
Important and excellent works (oils on canvas), including "Fly", 2005, "Drones", 2007, "Hod-dog" 2005, "Dancing" 2003, "Mix machine", 2005.
From 2001 to 2019 (intermittently), the artist was engaged in sculpture in ice and snow, and carried out large international projects and festivals of sand sculptures (Italy, France .Sweden ,China, USA).
The last period from 2012 to the present, is the culmination of the creative experience and many travels around the world and collisions with reality after returns, after which we still had to fight for something, or even express a symbolic message that the "old world" is already coming to an end "End of Eden", 2019 and a new era is already coming, the era of digitization, in which man is unable to meet or love another human being.
"In my painting, form is as important to me as content. However much I have experimented with form at different stages of my work, I have always been concerned with a clear message, with the content that the work carries. I always try to create images that speak, to include a maximum of information, using various symbols to describe reality." - in the words of Malgorzata Korenkiewicz herself.
Looking at the recent works of the new symbolism, a dialogue with the Master Jacek Malczewski is evident in the paintings, but it is modern, marked by a "deeper" puzzle, multithreading and multi-level cipher of the artist's thoughts.
Her mature creative language is individual, through expressions of beauty, hope for a better tomorrow, to anxieties, or prophecies and warnings of a new world and the end of an era.
The philosophical definition of good according to Plato comes to mind when we deal with the distinction between relative goods and absolute good.
Pleasure belongs to the former ("Carousel", 2008), and its value depends on the value of character, which is guided by practical intelligence ("Parallel Universes" 2019).
According to the Platonic concept, it cannot be described as ascetic or hedonistic. According to Russell, the unitary Platonic conception of pleasure is based on an inconsistent psychology, in which the requirement for compatibility between aspects of the soul is perceived on the one hand, and the relationship of control on the other, which in itself is a controversial thesis.
With regard to pleasure, my thesis is submission to control than sublimation and incorporation into the realm of virtue, which is supposed to be due to the fact that happiness in life is seen as a life guided by sola ratione.
Extremely eloquent symbolic image of the artist "Golden horn" 2020, refers to the Polish literature and the reprimand of the Polish political arena, and even the words " you had a golden horn, to the full of trepidation apocalyptic vision of the "Four Horsemen" , 2020, where we no longer measure time, and in fact time has accelerated and only a small part of humanity sees and feels this and wonders what awaits us next.
Apocalypse or entry into a whole new dimension of humanity.
The struggle of the old worlds against the hope of the coming of better ones and full faith in the victory of the white eagle, symbolizing the beloved Republic of Poland and that... "Poland is not yet (...) dead."
The soul-stirring message is the artist's objection against untruths, wars, violence, worldwide digitalization and disagreement with living a crummy life under someone else's dictates.
Rebellion in the 3rd creative period is more mature, thoughtful, different from the artist's first rebellious creative years, and contains a warning to the world.
Self-portrait of the Artist ( appears in many of the artist's works). It is a quiet hope that the world will finally come to its senses and Poland will not lose its national identity.
And as hope dies as the last, I believe and trust that the next creative period of Małgorzata Korenkiewicz will surprise us and write in the pages of art history, which I sincerely and wholeheartedly wish her."
