Nathan WASSERBERGER
1928 Chrzanów 1928 - 2013 New York
American painter of Jewish descent , known primarily for his portraits and nudes. Survived the Buchenwald concentration camp. In 1947 he emigrated to New York. He studied art at the Pratt Institute and with Ivan Olinsky and Byron Brown at the Art Students' League in New York, and in the late 1940s at the Académie Julian in Paris. Many of the paintings he created during his first years in the United States were directly related to his experience in the Holocaust or dealt with war-related themes. In the 1950s, he changed his style to one that has been described as "luminous," "uplifting" and "serene." Most of his works are portraits of beautiful women from different parts of the world, clothed or nude; self-portraits and images of well-known personalities from art and politics also appear.
