Auguste Denis RAFFET

French painter and printmaker, pupil of Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet and Jean Antoine Gros, author of numerous lithographs illustrating the times of the French Revolution, Napoleonic campaigns and events contemporary to himself, such as the development of the French Colonial Empire (the conquest of Algeria) or Napoleon III's intervention in Italy; Raffet's romantic works were popular and illustrated primarily historical events. In 1837, he traveled through Eastern and Southeastern Europe, during which he visited Crimea, among other places.
