Biography
He took his first painting lessons in Lviv. From 1856-66 he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow under W. Luszczkiewicz and J. Matejko. From 1871, he continued his studies at the Vienna academy under E. Engerth. In 1871 he settled permanently in Munich, where he joined a group of Polish artists, gathered around the person of J. Brandt, forming the so-called 'staff'. Together with his friend, painter Antoni Kozakiewicz, he ran a studio. From there he traveled to Krakow and Hungary. He painted mainly genre scenes, often with figures of children or gypsies in atmospheric settings, landscapes and portraits, and, in his earlier period, historical scenes. His paintings were successful and were sold by Munich 'kunsthändlers' to England and America. He exhibited his works at the TPSP in Cracow as early as 1861, later also at the TPSP in Lvov and from 1867 at the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw.
