Friedrich KLEINMANN
1897 Lviv - 1943 Janów
Painter, illustrator and caricaturist. He was also involved in stage design and theatrical costume design. He studied painting in Cracow, Vienna and Paris. After his studies, he settled in Lviv. He collaborated with the magazines "Szczutek", "Sygnały" and "Chwila", in which he published caricatures. Together with Kazimierz Sichulski, he also made caricatures of famous Lvov personalities, which decorated the interior of the Atlas restaurant in Lvov. In the last years before the outbreak of World War II, he devoted himself primarily to his work as a stage designer, costume designer and puppet maker for Lviv theaters: the satirical Semafor, the Jewish Theater and the Warsaw theaters: Azazel and the Ararat Theater. The subjects of his paintings were mostly genre scenes, often of Jewish life, portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He painted both in the realist convention and compositions influenced by German Expressionism. In his works he used oil, watercolor and gouache techniques. He often experimented, mixing techniques.
