The painting depicts the charge of the Prussian cavalry in the Battle of Sadowa, which took place on July 3, 1866. The defeat of the Austrians decided the fate of the Prussian-Austrian War and opened the way for the unification of Germany under the leadership of Prussia. Poles, forcibly conscripted into the armies of the partitioners, fought on both sides in the clash, as Cyprian Kamil Norwid wrote about: At Sadowa the Poles (Poznañ hulans) mainly won, beating and slaughtering each other with the Poles (Galician hulans).

Friedrich Kaiser ( Lörrach 1815 - Berlin 1890) - German lithographer and painter - battle painter, whose talent was formed under the influence of French battle painter Horace Vernet. He painted historical and battle scenes - from both the German, French and English wars. In 1838, at the side of Prince Maximilian of Bavaria, he traveled to Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Nubia, and was also in Malta. In the following years, he traveled to Asia and North Africa many more times, and these trips were reflected in his work. The artist's paintings are in the collections of museums in Berlin, Hamburg and Paris, among others.
