Frederick Pautsch - painter, printmaker and educator - began his studies in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under J. Unierzyski and L. Wyczółkowski, and then trained at the Académie Julian in Paris under J.P.Laurens. Starting in 1903, he often traveled to the Hutsul region. In 1906 he settled in Lviv. From 1912 to 1919 he was a professor of painting at the Academy of Art in Wroclaw; from 1919 he headed the School of Decorative Arts and Artistic Industry in Poznan; in 1925 he became a professor at the Cracow Academy. He belonged to the Tow. of Polish Artists "Art" and other creative associations, and participated in many exhibitions. He painted genre scenes from the life of the Hutsul people, religious compositions, portraits, still lifes and landscapes, and in an earlier period also historical paintings.
