Repeated theme with minor changes, characteristic of the paintings of Jerzy Kossak (1856 - 1955). Known in the literature under the title "Refreshment" or "A Common Meal," it depicts a lancer from the 3rd Cavalry Regiment (indicated by the dark yellow band on his cornet) at a rest stop, feeding bread held under his arm to his faithful companion - a black horse. The scene recurs in various landscapes forming its backdrop throughout the 1930s. Kazimierz Olszanski, in his monograph "Jerzy Kossak," presents two versions of it with composition and dimensions similar to ours.
