signed and dated p. d.: "JÓZEF RAPACKI 1919"
Jozef Rapacki gained fame as the most popular and accomplished Warsaw landscape painter of the late 19th century and early 20th century. It was the landscape that was the leading motif in his work. A secondary role was played by the artist's portrait depictions. Rapacki mainly portrayed members of his family - his father, wife, daughter, brother-in-law, sister - actress Honorata Leszczynska or people who were friends with him, such as singer and actress Lucyna Messal. A portrait of the latter, dated 1919, is in the collection of the Theater Museum in Warsaw and shows the actress backstage at a Warsaw operetta. The background depicted in this portrait is the same as that depicted by the artist in the painting presented at the auction, also from the same year.
