Signed and dated l. d.: "Juliusz Kossak/1897"
The unsurpassed master of drawing and watercolor was a great lover of horses. "In all periods of his work and all thematic varieties, the central motif of the artist's depiction remained the horse; the perfectly drawn and modeled silhouette of the horse - captured in motion or "posed" for a portrait - gained in Kossak's art the rank of a synonym for Polishness." At the very beginning of his artistic education, he made a 6-year-long (1844-1850) trek across the eastern borderlands of the former Republic of Poland. Even then, he was mainly involved in watercolor techniques, creating depictions of horses, scenes of rides, hunting and racing. "Being essentially self-taught, he developed, based on observation of nature and the pictorial conventions of European masters, a style that became a starting point and reference for many domestic painters, mainly watercolorists. Technical finesse, perfect drawing and virtuoso mastery of the difficult watercolor technique were among the hallmarks of Kossak's art."
