Biography
Studied in 1900-08 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow in the studios of Jozef Mehoffer, Leon Wyczółkowski and Stanisław Wyspiański. At the same time, he supplemented his artistic education at the Kunsgewerbeschule in Vienna under Anton von Kenner. In 1904 he traveled around Europe visiting Munich, Dresden, Rome, Florence and Paris, where he stayed for a while and where he attended the Académie Colarossi. Together with Ferdinand Pautsch and Wladyslaw Jarocki, he spent the winter of 1904-05 in the Hutsul region, which he later visited many times. From 1907 he lived in Lviv. He belonged to the Society of Polish Artists Art (since 1905) and to the Vienna Hagenbund (since 1907). During World War I, he fought in the Polish Legions. After the war, he became a professor at the State School of Decorative Arts and Artistic Industry in Lviv (1920-1930), and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (1930-39). He painted genre scenes, often related to the life of the Hutsuls, landscapes, portraits and paintings of historical and religious subjects. In addition, he was involved in many fields of applied art. He designed stained glass windows, mosaics, kilims and interior decorations. He did mural painting, graphics, including book graphics, and drew caricatures. He exhibited his works regularly, from 1903, at the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Cracow. Abroad, he took part in exhibitions in Paris, Budapest, Pittsburgh, Helsinki, Stockholm, Leipzig, Padua, Moscow, Rome and Berlin.
