Biography
He began his studies in painting at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, where he studied under K. Krzyzanowski. He continued his artistic education in Paris. Although he had the opportunity to get acquainted with new trends in art, such as cubism, he did not succumb to them and remained a traditionalist as a painter. He admired Hals, Velazquez, Zorn and Serov. In his early years, he also painted still lifes and compositions depicting scenes from Polish history. Pruszkowski was also a distinguished educator, becoming a professor of painting at the School of Fine Arts in 1922 and its director in 1930. The subjects of his paintings are usually portraits, both images of personalities, (J. Pilsudski, G. Narutowicz or S. Wojciechowski), as well as decorative and somewhat stylized images of women. He gathered around him a whole group of students fascinated by him, associated in groups such as the "Brotherhood of St. Luke," the "Warsaw School" and the "Freemasonry Lodge."
