DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK:
Teodor Axentowicz was fascinated by themes related to village life and Polish folklore - with a particular emphasis on the Carpathian region, he repeatedly created compositions showing a Hutsul old man with a young girl or boy. In this type of representation, the painter contrasted the ages of the figures, thus giving his works a symbolic meaning. The presented painting "Old Age and Youth (Hutsul)" belongs to this type of works.
The depicted characters are shown against the background of a winter landscape, from which they clearly stand out in color. However, it's worth taking your eyes off the pair of Hutsuls for a moment and looking at the elaborate background, which is unique in the context of similar paintings by the painter - snow-covered hills and trees and bushes loom in the distance. The landscape is enlivened by a mysterious silhouette traversing snow-covered fields.
