Tymon NIESIOŁOWSKI

Painter, printmaker, educator; studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow under Stanisław Wyspiański and Józef Mehoffer from 1900-1905. Between 1906 and 1926 he lived in Zakopane, from where he traveled to Italy, Paris and Munich. In 1908 he was a co-founder of the "Group of Five, from 1917 he was associated with the "Formists" grouping, and from 1922 with the "Rhythm" Association. In 1926 he moved to Vilnius, where he became director of the School of Arts and Crafts, and from 1928 taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Stefan Batory University. After the war he took over the chair of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun; from 1958 he was a member of the "Torun Group. He painted - distinguished by decorativeness of form and color - still lifes, nudes, portraits, less frequently landscapes.
In his work, he combined his fascination with classical beauty - in this case, the female nude (derived from the tradition of painting by I. A. D. Ingres) with the modern geometrization pioneered by P. Cezanne. The same figure is in the painting "In the Bath in the National Museum in Warsaw (MPW 1116 MNW).
