One of the few atmospheric landscapes by the artist from the Fontainebleau area, where Bakalovich stayed l. 1870s. Władysław Bakałowicz (1833-1903) painter, one of the most important artists of the 2nd half of the 19th century; studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts; lived permanently in Paris from 1863; participated in the Paris Salons, receiving decorations and awards; exhibited frequently (e.g. Brussels, Berlin, Vienna, New York), and his paintings were eagerly purchased; initially he produced portraits, often group portraits, as well as genre and historical scenes; he created vedutas and landscapes; he paid attention mainly to the problem of expressive chiaroscuro and vivid color play in dynamic compositions.
