Wladyslaw Skoczylas studied in Vienna and at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts under Teodor Axentowicz and Leon Wyczolkowski, as well as sculpture in the studio of Konstanty Laszczka. In Paris, he studied sculpture with Antoine Bourdelle. He studied printmaking in Leipzig, at the Academy of Graphic Arts. Recognized as the creator of modern Polish woodcut; he also masterfully used watercolor. He exhibited together with the Formists. He was a co-founder of the Association of Artists "Rhythm". In 1922-34 he held the chair of artistic graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and from 1932 was a professor at the academy. In his work, he readily drew on folk folklore, especially often the Podhale region. He was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. He is buried in the avenue of merit at Warsaw's Powązki Cemetery.
The work on display belongs to the early legacy of Wladyslaw Skoczylas and for many years remained in the collection of the artist's family. Oil works in the oeuvre of this artist are extremely rare.
