Work description:
In the work of Wlastimil Hofman a large role is played by portraits filled with nostalgia, in which the artist tried to include complex existential content. The pictorial field of the work on display is filled with a bust of a girl with dark, long hair, depicted with her eyes closed and her head gently bowed. The figure is immersed in a melancholy reverie, perhaps indulging in her memories. In the background is a sketchily depicted lowland landscape. On the right, a human silhouette outlined with a few brushstrokes is discernible.
The work is part of a group of small-format children's portraits willingly created by the artist, which usually consist of a bust filling the picture field, shown surrounded by a landscape complemented by symbolic staffage. The offered painting has high painterly qualities. Wlastimil Hofman built the entire composition using expressive lines, which, combined with rich impastos, affect the expressive power of the whole. The work can be counted among the psychological portraits created by the artist with symbolic overtones and melancholic mood.
