Biography
Born in 1928 in Paris, to a family of Russian immigrants.He spent his childhood in Milan, and then emigrated with his entire family to the USA in 1939 via France. When he lived in Hollywood as a teenager, he became interested in photography. He first worked in a photo lab and then studied at Los Angeles City College. In 1948 he settled in New York. From 1952 he worked as a freelance photographer with magazines: "Collier's", "Look", "Life and Holiday". Since 1953 he has been a member of the Magnum Photos agency, of which he was also president for many years.In his photography he pays most attention to man. He is considered one of the most prominent representatives of the humanistic photography trend. Among his photos are many portraits of personalities of the 20th century - artists and politicians.In addition to people, he enjoys photographing cities. In the photos of the "Snaps "series from New York, Paris or Rome, you can see how perfectly Erwitt is able to use the "decisive moment". He also achieves mastery in framing, which he says "is simply arranging all the elements in a rectangular frame." Many of Elliott Erwitt's photographs feature dogs, which the author enjoys photographing. "Dogs are very similar to humans, only they have more hair. But they don't complain and they don't ask you for money." He has published more than 20 albums.
