"National parade in Warsaw on November 5, 1905. Jan Raczynski Photographic Establishment in Warsaw, Krakowskie Przedmieście No. 1. "
Black and white photograph pasted on cardboard. At bottom right, within the photograph, dry emboss: J.Raczynski in Warsaw, Krak.Przedm. No 1. November 5, 1905.
The photo shows the Grand National parade (organized by the National Democracy) of the united population of Warsaw, regardless of origin, influence and political views, which took place on November 5, 1905. Residents took to the streets in protest against the bloody reaction of the authorities to the socialist riots of November 1. On that day, citizens wanted to show their joy at the announcement of a decree announcing elections to the Duma. The tsarist manifesto of October 30 was read as a harbinger of liberalization, however, the striking socialists expected deeper changes, and their slogans and actions soon became too radical. They demanded, among other things, the release of political prisoners, greater national freedoms, and sang the "Dabrowski Mazurka" and the "Red Banner." In Theater Square near City Hall, the crowd broke into the detention center to free labor activists held there. Law enforcement forces entered, the march was crushed, about 40 people were killed, while about 170 were wounded.
November 5, after a service at St. John's Cathedral, more than 200 thousand people marched through the streets of the Old Town to Miodowa Street, along Krakowskie Przedmieście to the Mickiewicz Monument, and from there to Saski Square.
