Amedeo Modigliani belongs to a narrow circle of artists who cannot be categorized as part of any of his contemporaries' artistic trends of the early 20th century. While his short - only
thirty-five-year biography is full of violent love affairs, a debauched, alcohol- and drug-filled life in the artistic quarters of Paris, or ongoing health problems, his works, except perhaps for the sometimes jittery fabric of his paintings, are characterized by calm and balance. Returning by memory to his native Italy, Modigliani draws on the heritage of antiquity, the Renaissance and Mannerism in his works. Perfect, static compositions, impeccable drawing and studied, "Mannerist" poses of models disturbed in proportion are a set of characteristics that characterize the works taking up the main subject of his works - portraits and nudes. Despite such a deep fondness for Western European art, Modigliani also succumbed to the charm of the primitive art admired at the time - in particular, African masks, the properties of which can be found in the synthetic depictions of portrayed people.
