Work description:
The motif of faces was the main element in the compositions by Edmund Monsiel. The artist based his artworks on visions, which were the result of a neurological disease. These visions were dominated by religious and apocalyptic themes. The figures and scenes he depicts are thoroughly surreal in their form, which is influenced not only by the subject matter itself, but also by the form - fluid lines and strong stylization of shapes.
Interestingly, the face shown at the bottom of the drawing is analogous to the one shown in one of the artist's self-described works in the film by Lukasz Jastrubczak titled 1913/Edmund Monsiel. As such, it can be assumed that it depicts the profile of Christ.
Edmund Monsiel was an artist who was fully out of the ordinary and filled with extremely strong creative passion, which resulted in unique compositions that are nowadays appreciated by many art-brut lovers.
