Work description:
Jacek Malczewski showed great interest in drawing as a child, and his first known works date from when the artist was 14 years old. Already in them one can see the great dexterity and confidence of his hand.
The sketch on offer shows, from the waist up, the figure of a naked man, who supports himself on a spar with his left hand, while resting his elbow on a high pedestal. The figure is shown from the side, with his head slightly turned back. The work is an exquisite anatomical study, in which the artist has rendered the male figure with great attention to detail and carefully developed the chiaroscuro with careful gravure. The drawing is a model example of an academic nude, in which the overriding feature is precision in rendering the human body. The artist was able to deepen this cool realism of representation during his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Henri Lehmann (a pupil of Ingres).
