ink/paper, dimension 23 x 18 cm, signed "J. Hrynkowski", dated. "Wiśniowa
4 / August 939"
Author's dedication "To colleague Adam J. Hrynkowski".
Impressive and sketchy portrait of a small, barefoot boy in short shorts, shown in profile in full view, with his arms stretched out in front of him and leaning on the window sill. The author's humorous dedication and the object's origin in the family collection indicate that the person portrayed here is Adam Wasilkowski, later a well-known surgeon from Poznan, son of Eustachy Wasilkowski, a painter and colorist from Poznan. The portrait was painted in Wiśniowa, a village in Podkarpacie, which was the seat of the Mycielski family. They were famous for their hospitality and devotion to many excellent artists. They were generous patrons for them, generous hosts and organizers of numerous meetings, plein-air events and exhibitions. In the interwar period Wiśniowa was an important cultural center between Krakow and Lviv, hosting the greatest artists from many fields and radiating to the surrounding area. The summer of 1939, when the portrait was created, was the last time artists met here for a summer vilgiatura.
